In pre-Hispanic times, performing the appropriate rituals to maintain the “favor” of Tlaloc by requesting rain was essential to prevent droughts or floods in farmlands and cities. The worship of both water deities (Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue) was deeply important in the worldview of the Nahua peoples, as the success of all agricultural activities depended on it.
Today, rituals connected to these divine figures still exist in many Indigenous communities, as life continues to flourish through the presence of this vital element: water. In 2024, the public was invited to rain-request ceremonies held at the four cardinal points and in the center of Mexico, within the “House of Maize and Food Culture” at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex.
